What Does “Health” Mean to You?
In our modern society of instant gratification, it’s easy to get caught in the comparison trap. Marketing counts on this truth. You see the thing, you compare your life to it, and decide you want that thing…now…because it will make you better in some way.
Therefore a healthy body can and will look different to every single human on this Earth. What I decide is healthy for me may not work for you, your child, your neighbor, or your Grandmother because we all have different needs.
For example, I am 5’3” and 150 pounds. I live in chronic neck and lower back pain. I’m sensitive to dairy, gluten, white potatoes, seafood and fish, and eggs. I have had my gallbladder, right ovary, and half of my thyroid removed. I have Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis. I have had endometriosis, migraine headaches, vasovagal syncope, viral meningitis, 2 knee surgeries, and pain shots in my back and right hip. I regularly visit a massage therapist, physical therapist, acupuncturist, chiropractor, and energy healer. I take an anti-depressant, an anti-anxiety medication, thyroid medication, melatonin and a multivitamin. Those are the facts.
The feeling I want is to wake in the morning naturally and fully rested. I want to get out of bed easily and comfortably. I want to eat the foods I love and feel energized all day long. I want to be fully-present in every moment and remember everything. I want to fall asleep peacefully and quickly and sleep soundly without interruption. Those are feelings.
So “Health” for me is more about feelings than facts. I want to FEEL healthy for myself. It’s not about the numbers. I don’t strive to hit a certain weight goal. I don’t strive to fit into a particular size of clothing. I don’t strive to compare my body to anyone else’s.
What does “health” mean to you?
Today, I challenge you to look at your health and body in a different way than you’re used to. Instead of focusing on facts like numbers, pounds, percentages, and inches, but instead focus on feeling. How do you want to feel?
Take out a journal and write today’s date at the top and then underneath the date write the question, “What does health mean to me?” Take a few minutes to free-write on this topic and allow your feelings to flow through your pen onto your paper.
If you’d like you can listen to this soft, harp music playing in the background to help keep you focused and on track.
